Cardiac arrest is an emergency scenario which can strike anyone, all of a sudden. Basic Life Support- Basic Life Support is the basic CPR program and is the foundation of Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Correct performance of BLS by a well-trained professional would result in good ACLS and PALS.
· If you come across a victim who you feel have been at the receiving end of a cardiac arrest or heart attack then immediately assess the victim’s response which you can do by shaking the victim or by shouting out to him or her. If the victim is unresponsive, check for his or her breathing. Also make sure to go for emergency medical services and get hold of an AED device. These days most public places consist of an AED device which stands for Automated External Defibrillator.
· After activating the EMS, check for the carotid pulse of the victim for 5 to 10 seconds.
· If the victim is not breathing but has pulse, then provide with rescue breaths which should be delivered at a rate of one breath for every 5 to 6 seconds. If the pulse is absent then immediately start off with the chest compressions which should be hard, fast and deep with minimum interruptions. You should deliver the chest compressions at a rate of 100 per minute and there should be minimal interruption which would increase the chances for Return Of Spontaneous Circulation.
Remember that it is only proper administration of the procedures which can lead to a victim’s survival and nothing else and for that what is required is a good amount of training.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support
· What is important in this phase is a good amount of assessment because the information gathered during assessment is important for making good treatment plans. Do not place electrode pads of a defibrillator on top of the other devices in order to prevent alterations of data.
· If the rescue breathing is not enough use a bag-mask and an advanced airway. If endotracheal tube placement has been decided on then use waveform carnography to confirm and monitor the ET tube placement.
· Administer adequate oxygen and support ventilation.
· Monitor cardiopulmonary quality
· Attach and monitor a defibrillator
· Establish intravenous access
· Provide with the appropriate pharmacologic medications
