- Smoke point
The
temperature at which oil starts to create smoke is known as the smoke point or
flashpoint of that oil. It is an indication that the oil is deteriorating and
may produce free radicals and compounds that can hurt the body and provide a
burnt or bitter flavor to meals.
One
example of a substance with a low smoke point is extra virgin olive oil. It is
excellent for salad dressings or quick sautés but turns rancid when used for
deep frying. Meanwhile, safflower oil, which has a high smoke point, is a
suitable option for frying due to its properties.
- Best oils for
health
Most
oils have a mixture of saturated fats, MUFAs, and PUFAs. Lowering cholesterol
levels can be achieved by selecting foods that are high in unsaturated fats and
low in saturated fatty acids (SFA).
Thankfully,
there are several heart-healthy solutions available like olive, peanut, rice
bran, grapeseed, avocado, canola, and flaxseed.
- Avocado
There

- Canola
Canola
oil has a medium-high smoke point, making it a suitable choice for baking,
cooking in the oven, and stir-frying. It is also a good source of MUFA and some
PUFA. Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid, is abundant in it.
- Corn
It
is a fantastic option for light sautéing, sauces, and baking and is another
cholesterol-free option. It tastes mild and costs less than other oils.
Additionally, studies show that maize oil can decrease LDL by nearly three
times more effectively than olive oil.
- Grapeseed
The
taste and smoke point of this PUFA oil are modest. This works well for
stir-fries and foods that are baked or fried in an oven. It contains a lot of
vitamin E, which has been shown to have positive effects on health and heart
health.
- Flaxseed
This
oil is abundant in omega-3s and has a host of health advantages, including
improved heart health, is a nutritional powerhouse. It is only suitable for
non-heated cooking due to its low smoke point.
- Olive
An
excellent option for heart health is extra-virgin olive oil. The Mediterranean
