Black or
green, hot or iced, tea has gained immense popularity among people which is
increasing with each passing day. As per the Tea Association of USA, the tea
market has quadrupled over the past two decades. The rising popularity of tea
can be attributed to its health benefits- many of which are linked to the heart
and blood vessels.
Tea is a
good source of compounds known as catechins and epicatechins, which are thought
to be responsible for tea's beneficial health effects. These compounds belong
to a group of plant chemicals namely flavonoids which as per research helps
quelling inflammation which in turn may reduce plaque buildup inside arteries.
Green tea has slightly higher amounts of these chemicals in comparison to black
tea.
Benefits of Tea- A few short-term studies have shown
that drinking tea may improve vascular reactivity—a measure of how well your
blood vessels respond to physical or emotional stress. Drinking either black or
green tea is also said to lower harmful LDL cholesterol levels. Blood pressure
levels may also drop slightly in people who drink tea. As per a few large,
population-based studies, drinking black or green tea on a regular basis is
said to significantly reduce the likelihood for someone to get heart attacks
and strokes.
Black, Green or Herbal Tea- The
Difference:

Black
and green tea basically comes from the same plant, Camellia sinensis, which is an
evergreen shrub that grows in mountainous areas in China, India, and other
countries. The main difference between them stem from what happens after the
leaves are harvested and allowed to wilt.

For
making green tea, the leaves are quickly steamed or heated to stop oxidation
which causes browning. On the other hand, the leaves are crushed, torn, curled
or rolled and allowed to oxidize before being dried in making black tea. Black
tea has slightly lower amounts of flavonoids than green tea which can be
attributed to the additional processing step in making black tea which degrades
some of the flavonoids.

Herbal
teas are made from a range of different herbs, spices, and other plants, such
as mint, cinnamon, licorice, ginger, and rose hips. There isn’t enough research
to support the potential health benefits of herbal tea.
So include
tea in your daily routine which can prove to be highly beneficial for your
heart. But don’t be tempted by green tea extracts or supplements that promise
an easy way to get a concentrated dose of flavonoids. Have a cup or two of tea
per day, do not go overboard. Drink tea in moderation. Stir in a little sugar,
do not add heaping teaspoons of sugar as then you would most probably cancel
out tea's possible benefits.
